Paying suppliers? Check the name before the money moves
A wrong digit sends money to a stranger. A one-step name check on the phone number or bank account prevents it.

You are about to send KES 250,000 to a supplier. The bank account number arrived on WhatsApp. It was typed by one person, forwarded by another and pasted by a third. Everyone involved is honest. One digit is still wrong.
Why this happens
A bank account number is a string of digits with no meaning attached. So is a phone number. Both look exactly as right when they are wrong. Most payout systems will happily send money to any valid number, and you only find out when the supplier calls asking where their payment is.
By then the money is with a stranger, and getting it back depends on their goodwill and a long conversation with the bank.
Verify, then pay
FinoQ adds one step before the money moves: a check on who actually owns the destination.
- For phone numbers, you see the name the line is registered to.
- For bank accounts, you see the name of the account holder.
The confirm screen says something like “Verified: registered to ACHIENG WANJIRU” right above the PIN field. If that is the supplier you meant, you enter your PIN. If it is not, you stop. Nothing has left your wallet.
It works everywhere you pay
The same check is available wherever you send money from:
- The dashboard, for one-off payouts.
- Beneficiaries and saved contacts, where accounts are checked once when you add them.
- The API, so platforms can gate payouts on a verified name automatically.
- WhatsApp, as an optional tick before you review and confirm.
Who it protects
- Finance teams paying many suppliers, where one typo is easy to miss.
- Platforms settling drivers, agents or merchants, who cannot afford wrong-account disputes at scale.
- Owners approving payouts on their phone, who want to see a name, not just a number.
What it costs
Each check costs a small fee from your service tokens, and the amount is shown before you run it. Numbers that have already been verified cost less to check again, and a check that fails on the provider’s side is refunded. Compared with a single misdirected payment, it is very cheap insurance.
A habit worth building
The best place for the check is when you add a payee, not when you pay them. Verify the account once, save it, and every payout after that goes to a name you have already seen.
